The 2004-2009 Prius

Since the Toyota Prius first debuted in the United States in 2001, it has become one of the most popular cars in America. About half of the 2 million Priuses sold worldwide were sold in the United States. Unfortunately, despite the runaway sales and cultural impact the vehicle has made, it has a number of design, mechanical, and electrical problems that present a serious danger to drivers and passengers. The electronic acceleration system may cause sudden acceleration problems, while the drum brakes have proved dangerously insufficient.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a sudden acceleration- or brake-related accident involving a 2004-2009 Toyota Prius, the Toyota sudden acceleration attorneys of Habush Habush & Rottier, S.C. may be able to help you get the compensation you deserve. Sudden Acceleration

The Toyota Motor Corporation is mired in what is rapidly becoming one of the largest product recalls in recent memory. Over 8 million vehicles have been recalled, including 437,000 hybrid vehicles such as the Prius. Most of the recalls are due to an error which causes the vehicles to suddenly and uncontrollably accelerate with no warning. Over 200 injuries and 39 fatalities have been attributed to sudden acceleration, and 2,000 complaints have been compiled over the last five years.

Sudden acceleration is a serious problem that could affect you and your family. Drum Brake Failure

The Prius has also come under fire for having insufficient brakes. The vehicle is fitted with drum brakes, which are prone to failure under some situations. If the brakes overheat, drum brakes can experience brake fade, which causes the car to lose braking power. Most modern cars use the more reliable (but more expensive) disc brakes, but Toyota assumed that the Prius’ braking energy recovery program would mean that drum brakes would be sufficient.

Unfortunately, they seem to have been mistaken. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating Toyota over claims that the Prius may lose braking ability when driving on uneven roads or over potholes. The NHTSA has received at least 124 complaints about the Prius’ insufficient brakes.
